Course Description

Participants will be able to …

  • Share with others what mindfulness is and its benefits

  • Understand how mindfulness relates to adult wellness and social and emotional learning in the classroom

  • See their personal wellness goals and make a plan to progress on them


Day 1 Wellness and Mindfulness Defined

  • Practice an environmental scan

  • Define wellness and source daily wellness practices from the group 

  • Create some goals to improve your wellness in the months ahead

  • Learn what mindfulness is and is not, it’s benefits, and what it looks like in caretaking relationships

  • In an experiential activity, make connections between the basics of mindfulness and the Center for Academic and Social and Emotional Learning’s basic five competencies.

  • Learn about the zones of experience and the stress response and how they can help teachers to be trauma informed meditation guides and students increase self-awareness and self-regulation when meditating

  • Meditation practice using an anchor


Day 2 Reducing Stress and Creating a Wellness Paln

  • Practice a group movement activity for settling the nervous system

  • Group activity and discussion about the location of uncomfortable feelings in the body

  • Walking meditation practice

  • Draw ways to reduce stress in life

  • Ways mindfulness contributes to stress reduction

  • Make a plan to achieve your wellness goals in the months ahead


Instructor(s)

Facilitator Jill Stansbury

Jill Stansbury is a Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction facilitator qualified by the Brown University Center for Mindfulness and a Health and Wellbeing Coach certified by Duke University that has been running parenting and meditation groups for fifteen years. She has been a co-parent, extended family member caretaker, and classroom educator / school administrator for almost thirty years. Meditation has been a daily part of her life for over twenty-five years, and she looks forward to practicing with you. Her goal has always been to guide people to look at their strengths and learn additional tools to increase wellness. This course is part of her vision to share that approach with as many individuals, educators and parents as possible so that the world becomes a place that welcomes and cares for us all.
