Course Description and Goals

This 6-session, 15-hour, online interactive workshop is designed for early childhood educators, teachers, and caregivers who work with children from birth to six years of age. (Parents will also find this workshop helpful; however, the focus is on early childhood education.) Participants will learn to apply the principles and tools of Positive Discipline, an Adlerian research-based philosophy, to working with groups of young children. They will also gain a deeper understanding of how young children learn, the importance of belonging to social and emotional learning, and how best to teach those skills in a classroom or care setting.

  • Create a classroom or care setting where children can develop a sense of belonging and significance based on the importance of contribution and mutual respect.

  • Understand how young children learn and how to adapt teaching to the needs of this age group.

  • Foster essential social and emotional skills to support development and school readiness, and understand behavior and how to guide it in groups of young children.

  • Teach the essential skills for developmentally appropriate participation in class meetings.

  • Learn Positive Discipline and Adlerian concepts for use in the classroom, preschool community, and with parents.

  • Explore the importance of culturally relevant teaching practice in social and emotional learning.

Facilitator

Jill Stansbury

Jill Stansbury is a Social and Emotional Learning Consultant and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction trainer based out of Blaine, Washington. In addition, she is a certified Positive Discipline teacher & parent educator/trainer and has facilitated parent and educator learning communities in preschools, charter schools, independent schools, homeless shelters, and online in both China and the United States for 14 years.

She holds a master's degree in educational leadership from DePaul University and a Montessori teaching credential. Brown University recognizes her as a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction teacher, and she has been studying and practicing mindfulness for 25 years. She has over 25 years of classroom and administrative experience in early childhood through secondary education. Her goal has always been to guide people to look at their strengths and learn additional tools to increase wellness. This course is part of her vision to share that approach with as many individuals, educators and parents as possible so that the world becomes a place that welcomes and cares for us all.

Aisha Pope

Aisha Pope is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who has worked in San Diego, California’s Children's Behavioral Health System of Care for over 20 years. She currently works for San Diego Center for Children as a Program Director in the Foster Family Agency Stabilization & Treatment (FFAST) and Intensive Family Services (IFS) Programs, and sees individuals, couples, and families through her private practice, Roots & Wings Consulting. Aisha has been a Certified Positive Discipline Trainer since 2011 and became a Lead Trainer in 2021. She is one of the authors of the Positive Discipline Tools for Kids Social Emotional Learning program which includes a set of tool cards and a guidebook that teach PD tools directly to children! In her clinical work, Aisha specializes in serving marginalized communities including Black and Indigenous People of Color, LGBTQ+ Families, foster families, youth birth to 5 and their caregivers, and those who have trauma or behavioral health challenges. She is passionate about Social Justice and using Adlerian and Positive Discipline principles to support social justice work. Aisha loves the work she does and the families she serves, but above all, she is proud and grateful for her job as mom to 16-year-old Jayden and 8-year-old Maya, and wife of 20 years to Don.

Refund / Cancellation Policy

A full refund minus a $35 processing fee will be given when the request for a refund is made up to 30 days prior to the first day of a workshop. Refunds are not available for cancellations less than 30 days before a workshop. However, paid registrants can transfer to another workshop within one year at no additional cost. Refunds are not available after a transfer is made or if you do not provide advanced notice that you will not be attending the workshop.
